Subject: USGFC: Mini-Core -- Contextual Information

One of the topics on the tentative agenda for the November 13, 2009 meeting of the USG Faculty Council advocates includes the "mini-core".   I recently contacted Dr. Robert Vaughan, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Campus-based Initiatives and member of the USG Academic Affairs Staff, to request an update on the "mini-core".  This email conversation is copied below and the attached document is part of his update.  In short, a proposal to expand the current "mini-core" is in the pipeline for consideration.

Craig,

Attached to this message is a memo that I sent to Regents' Advisory Committee Representatives (via their respective listservs) a couple of weeks ago.  I think it will give you the information you need about the current status of TCSG-USG articulation.  I would be happy to speak with the USG Faculty Council about the project, but I will be at a Council on General Education meeting in Dahlonega.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

-Robert Vaughan

Subject: Mini-Core

Last year (March 2009), I attended a meeting of the USG Faculty Council advocates held at the BoR/USG offices at which you provided information about the mini-core.  At that time, you indicated that there was an ongoing negotiations in progress to expand this mini-core from nine hours (Area A Essential Skills -- English and Math courses) to as many as thirty hours.  When I read section 3.3.5 of the BoR policy manual http://www.usg.edu/policymanual/ [addressing collaboration between the USG and Tech Schools], the mini-core articulated there indicates 9 hours. (passage I see in the on-line BoR policy manual is copied below).

There is another meeting of the USG Faculty Council advocates scheduled for Friday November 13, 2009.  Is there an update on the mini-core available for distribution to members of this group to indicate its current status? If so, could you direct me to the information (if it is available on-line) or indicate how I might obtain such information?

Any information that you could supply would be appreciated.

Relevant excerpt regarding mini-core from BoR Policy 3.3.5.2
USG institutions will accept the following core courses for transfer from TCSG institutions accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools:

 1.  Introduction to Mathematical Modeling - MATH 1101 (USG)/MAT 190 (TCSG)
 2.  College Algebra - MATH 1111 (USG)/MAT 191 (TCSG)
 3.  Pre-calculus - MATH 1113 (USG)/MAT 194 (TCSG)
 4.  Composition I - ENGL 1101 (USG)/ENG 191 (TCSG)
 5.  Composition II - ENGL 1102 (USG)/ENG 193 (TCSG)

This agreement is effective for students who enroll in English and mathematics courses beginning January 2002 and who have met the requirements, including the minimum test score requirements agreed to by TCSG and the USG, for exemption or exit from developmental studies/learning support.
