Subject: follow-up to GRPWG meeting today
Hello All,
This is a combination of notes from today?s meeting as well follow-up to
questions we had.
1)
I talked to Ken McGill and he is getting the
word out that the forum will not begin until 3:30, after the retreat
social. PLEASE encourage folks to stay for the forum!
2)
Ken Farr?I ?cc??d you on this in case you need
anything. Please let me know. You & David M are slated to offer concurrent
sessions on Parliamentary Procedure from 9:30-10:30.
3)
We refined the task for 11:20-11:40 (after parallel
session II)?Nancy is in charge, Lee will make a facilitator?s guide for
standing committee chairs (Thanks Lee who is also making sign-in sheets),
participants will be asked to get into standing committee groups and
veterans and fledglings will exchange information from the morning session.
4)
I was contacted by Matthew Buchanan from Academic
Affairs and he has indicated that I can charge folders, pens, name tags etc
to the President?s account
5)
We are uncertain whether Joe & Craig?s session on the
handbook needs anything from us (Guys-is this a hard copy or an electronic
handbook?)
6)
I will purchase 3 $10 giftcards for ?Bingo? at the end
and asked to be reimbursed.
7)
We will meet at WCC on Monday at 11 a.m. to put packets
together. We will meet at 8:30 on the morning of the retreat.
Finally, Howard--Our session from 9:30 ? 10:30 goes as follows:
For the first 5 minutes ask people to vent with someone nearby them about
what?s wrong with Senate (or really anything, for that matter) (10 min)
Then for about 5 minutes ask people to privately self-assess how they
balance the tension that ensues because they are representatives of a
particular constituency but they are also citizens of the university. Ask
them to think about any situations where this has been an issue. Ask them
when decisions have to be made how do they (if they do) ensure that they use
their power for the good of the university community. In pairs or trios
they are to come up with recommendations for beginning senators regarding
this dilemma. (15 min)
Changing gears ask them to identify the issue that has been the most
controversial and/or hardest to steer. Tell how it was steered. Then ask
them to consider ways that issues that must be considered by more than one
committee might be handled?for instance an alternate meeting time for two
committees to meet about 1 issue. Share recommendations (20 min).
Finally the whole group should make up a list of ?a good senator does??
recommendations to share with the other group at the retrospective. If time
report out (15 min)
I think that?s it. GRPWG members, thanks for all of your help and
patience. See you at 11 a.m. on 8/9 and at 8:30 on 8/11.
