Academic Governance Committee (AGC) Report

given to the University Senate on September 25, 2006

Submitted by Mike Gleason, Chair

AGC chair reported on past (9/1/06) AGC meeting and coming (10/6/06) AGC meeting.

1.  Examined student academic dishonesty proposal.  Issues surrounding this:
-  separating grade appeals from honor court violations;
-  defining or making consistent definition of plagiarism;
-  timeline involved with grievance procedure;
-  who makes sanctions; and
-  new materials will be presented by VPAA affairs office to move this proposal forward at our next meeting (Oct 6.)

2.  Commencement deadline proposal (proposal written by Deans Council)

-  concerns that applications are being signed and submitted after deadline 9/1 deadline;
-  concerns voiced about student eligibiliy to graduate;
-  mechanics of process need to be reviewed and Paul Jones is heading IGG (information gathering group) looking into adminstrative issues;  Jonathan Barton and Jennifer Flory are serving on that IGG;
-  item has received some press, you were notified by email;
-  we will hear a progress report from IGG at Oct 6 meeting; and
-  they will also address how they plan to examine student concerns as well as those of the Deans, other administrators and the faculty.

3.  Will again look at adding AGST 2010 and BLST 2010 to Area C of the core.  Concerns existed at 9/1 meeting about whether this should be in Area E rather than Area C, Eustace Palmer will address this at our 10/6 meeting.

At 10/6 meeting new items will be considered:
1.  Look at two proposals from Autumn Grubb and Deborah Vess to change the format of the existing "Excellence in Teaching" award category somewhat, and to add a new category of "Excellence in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning"
2.  A proposal from Academic Affairs to alter the way the faculty research committee is constituted and functions.  VPAA proposal is based on recommendations received from the Research Task Force this summer.
