Student Government Association (SGA) Names Student Senators for 2007-2008
Relevant Bylaws
(note that this bylaw was recommended at the February 26, 2007 meeting and approved by President Leland on Mar 6, 2007)II.Section1.A.4. The two (2) student members are selected for a one year term of service. The term of service of a student member shall begin with the call to order of the spring organizational meeting of the University Senate and continue until his/her successor assumes office. The eligibility requirements of students to serve as university senators are identical to those required for membership on the Student Government Association as specified in the most current Student Government Association Bylaws. The selection process for these members shall be determined by the Student Government Association. The President of the Student Government Association shall ensure that (1) the eligibility requirements as stated in Student Government Association Bylaws as well as a written description of the selection procedure developed by the Student Government Association is submitted to the Executive Committee no later than December 1 and (2) the selection is implemented according to the procedures with the results reported to the Executive Committee no later than February 1. These eligibility requirements, procedures and results shall be archived in the appropriate format. The Executive Committee shall announce the results of these selections no later than February 6.
V.Section1.C.9. The Executive Committee shall have the responsibility for initiating and maintaining a system of overlapping terms for elected University Senators.
Transition Year
Given that the recent revisions to the bylaws did not allow sufficient time to fully implement the process articulated in the bylaws for the selection of student senators during this transitional year, the Student Government Association representatives had a short turnaround in which to make their selection.

The following is the basic process in which the Student Government Association (SGA) selected its senators for University Senate for 2007-2008:
Two students are selected to serve as senators to the University Senate. The Student Government Association (SGA) President-Elect makes the selection of the two students. By University Senate bylaws, any two students on the campus that meet the eligibility requirements to serve on the SGA are eligible to hold the student senator positions on the University Senate. As the SGA President-Elect, I, Ryan Greene, decided to select the student members for the University Senate based on their relationship with SGA. I chose myself, the President-elect of SGA (which is the President of SGA for the term that corresponds to the term of the student senator position on the University Senate), as well as one other member of the SGA Executive Board. When I chose the second senator, the Vice President position had not yet been filled. So, instead of choosing the second highest position in the chain of command, the Vice President for SGA, I chose the incoming SGA Secretary for 2007-2008, Alissa Torchia.
I also did not chose the upcoming Vice President for SGA because of how busy he/she is throughout the year. With everything going on within SGA, the Vice President needs to monitor the internal aspects of the organization as closely as possible. Choosing him or her as a University Senate Senator might hinder this duty.
Ryan Greene
President-Elect (SGA President 2007-08)
