After seeing Dean's email below, I did a little looking for information on
plus/minus grading. Commencing Summer 2006, a three year pilot allowing
plus/minus grading at UGA and Georgia State University was instituted by the
BoR with a moratorium on plus/minus grading at other USG institutions until
the pilot was completed . There is some language below taken from a more
lengthy passage in the Feb 2009 BoR meeting minutes that seem to indicate
that this pilot is complete. So I share this as information.
Excerpt from 2007-2008 Academic Policy Committee (GCSU) Annual Report:
- Plus/Minus grading system: Lee Gillis presented the results
of initial info gathering on the +/- grading system policy currently
being piloted by UGA, and the BOR has issued a statement that no school
is to implement it until the pilot is complete. Info can be found at

Feb 2009 BoR Minutes:

Particularly relevant excerpt from these Feb
2009 minutes is this passage:
"For these reasons, plus/minus grades may not be used in the calculation of
the HOPE GPA. This
caveat ensures that Board policy meets the requirements of HOPE legislation
administered by the
Georgia Student Finance Commission. Because this is a national standard of
good grading practice,
it is recommended that Policy 305 be amended to allow the University of
Georgia and Georgia State
University to use plus/minus grades. If other universities request
to use plus/minus grades in the
future, those requests would be brought before the Board for approval."

I have an item for inclusion on an ECUS agenda (if
not this meeting then the next). The SON has asked me to bring an issue
to ECUS for discussion. At the SON's retreat last Wednesday discussion
about grading scales arose. University of Georgia has gone to a plus and
minus grading scale. The SON would like to know if it is possible for
GCSU to consider this same type grading scale?
I may not be present at this Wednesday's meeting. I
have been sick with flu since last Thursday. I teach Wednesday, but may
go home after teaching if I do not feel well. Will let the committee
know Wednesday afternoon.
