Student Affairs Committee (SAC) Report

Given to the University Senate 01-29-07

Submitted by Ms. Kathleen McGeever

Last Senate meeting (Nov 2006), time ran out before we could provide our committee report but rather than rehashing please check the minutes (or see the written SAC report for Nov 2006).  We have moved forward with the agenda so our last meeting minutes, the Senate report posting and the report from today meeting will be helpful.

1.       The first agenda item is our commencement speaker survey which will be on-line only until tomorrow (Jan 30).  Please encourage faculty, staff and students to go to the survey and answer the questions as they will not take long.  The way you get to it is through MyCats on the announcement section it has a link to ANSWER A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT COMMENCEMENT.  We hope to get the results of the survey to Dr. Leland shortly after tabulation (before the next Senate meeting) and then I will report the results to the Senate at our next (Feb 2007) meeting.

2.       The second agenda item is PRIORITY REGISTRATION.  The committee met with Dr. Jones and Suzanne Pitman at our last committee meeting.  We discussed the need for a policy which currently does not exist and Dr. Jones and Suzanne shared with us that due to the changing situation in the Registrar's office there were some students allowed to PRIORITY REGISTER that had not gone through the current process that has been in effect for some time.  It was also discussed that PRIORITY REGISTRATION is nothing new and campuses across the United States do just that.  The Committee discussed the desire to see a policy that was based on NEED rather than merit or honor.  It was decided that Suzanne Pittman would call a meeting of the REGISTRATION TASK FORCE and that they would submit a Policy Draft to our committee.  The REGISTRATION TASK FORCE met last week and the issue was discussed.  They agree with the SAC on a NEED based policy and will be working to write a policy to submit to the SAC before our meeting on Friday (Feb 2). In the meantime, groups that did not go through the current process will not be allowed to register early during the coming go around.  Every group wishing priority registration will have to apply or re-apply in the fall.  The REGISTRATION TASK FORCE will be making some structural changes in the approval process to help their workload but everyone will be made aware of the changes. The SAC hopes to present the PRIORITY REGISTRATION POLICY as a motion at the next meeting (Feb 2007)of the Senate.
