University Senate Elections in the John H. Lounsbury School of Education

1. The motion was made at the March 31, 2003 faculty meeting to continue to have five representatives; one from each department and two at large and that the election be by secret ballot.  Motion was seconded and after no further discussion, vote taken and motion carried unanimously.  Dean Fields informed the School of Education faculty that the SOE has three senators in place who would be willing to continue to serve on the senate completing the second year of a two-year term.  (Cheryl Reynolds (EDEL/EDEX), Leigh Hern (At-Large) and Marianne Edwards (EDFS/EDIT)) and therefore the SOE should elect two more senators for two-year terms; one at-large and one in Early Childhood/Middle Grades Department.  Dean Fields informed the group that she would submit this motion to the Committee on Committees.

2. The following memo was sent to all faculty in the School of Education from the Committee on Committees informing them of the process to nominate individuals for the senate elections and then to submit their ballot for the specific seat:

To: School of Education Faculty

Subject:  Nomination and Election of School of University Senators

Date:  April 3, 2003

The School of Education has two GC&SU University Senate vacancies, one in the Early Childhood & Middle Grades department and one at large.  These vacancies need to be filled by next Friday, April 11.  This is an important election as GC&SU moves forward with shared governance.  Please take the time to nominate faculty members for these positions. In order to prepare the ballots, we need your nominations for these two vacancies by the end of the day tomorrow, Friday, April 4, 2003

Please send your nominations separately for the Early Childhood & Middle Grades and at large nominees to Cheryl Reynolds at cheryl_reynolds31328@yahoo.com.   She will contact the nominees to determine their willingness to serve as a university senator.  Based on the candidate’s response, ballots will be developed and sent electronically to the School of Education faculty.  The Early Childhood & Middle Grades faculty will receive an electronic ballot for each vacancy.  The faculty of the other SOE departments will receive one electronic ballot for the at large vacancy.

The election of university senators at GC&SU requires election by secret ballot.  Faculty will receive specific directions on how to cast their vote/s for each vacancy with their electronic ballots.  The directions will include printing their ballot/s, selecting the candidate of their choice, sealing their ballot in a regular envelope, taking their sealed envelope/s to the dean’s office, initially their name, and putting their sealed ballot/s in the appropriate box at the student work desk.  The deadline for submitting ballots will be noon on Friday, April 11.

Dean Fields will meet with the SOE University Senators after the election to review the bi-laws of the University Senate.
